About Ironbridge

The village of Ironbridge is based in the Telford and Wrekin Borough, on the banks of the River Severn and in the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge, a naturally formed ravine that saw a period of great economic development during the Industrial Revolution.

At the end of the 18th century, the iconic iron bridge was built, giving the village its name. It was the first of its kind, fabricated solely from cast iron, which had begun to be smelted much cheaper in nearby Coalbrookdale. Ironbridge is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its rich history with regards to industrial processes.

Celebrated England footballer Billy Wright, the Wolverhampton Wanderers centre half who played more than 100 times for England during his career, was born in Ironbridge in 1924. He holds the record for being the first player to reach 100 appearances, as well as the most consecutive appearances in international football and the most appearances by a Wolverhampton player.

As with much of Shropshire, and particularly the areas around the Severn, Ironbridge is prone to flooding, with particularly bad floods seen in February 2020 when the portable flood barrier was compromised following large quantities of rain brought by storms Ciara and Dennis.
