About Atherstone
Located on the route of Watling Street, one of the key Roman roads, Atherstone is also situated between two bodies of water, the River Anker and the Coventry Canal. In the Domesday Book of 1086, Atherstone is named as being under the protectorate of Lady Godiva, the famous Anglo-Saxon noblewoman, said to have ridden naked through the streets of nearby Coventry in protest against her husband’s increasing taxation on locals.
The Shrovetide Atherstone Ball Game is an annual event in the town. Centred around a game of Medieval football, the match honours a similar event held in 1199 between the counties of Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Back then the prize was a bag of gold. It was cancelled for the first time in its 821 year history in 2021 due to social distancing restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
