About Burton upon Trent
Located about 11 miles from Derby, the Staffordshire town of Burton grew up around the Benedictine Abbey that was established in 1003 AD by the Anglo-Saxon thegn Wulfric Spott. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, the Abbey was turned into a local church and other buildings sold off. There are still traces in residential properties near to the site it occupied.
Burton is widely known for its brewing, enabled by the strong water supply via the Trent, and the town is currently home to the UK division of Coors, which also produces brands such as Carling, one of the Marston Brewery sites, and a number of local breweries. Being that yeast is an important ingredient in beer, its extract is widely supplied to the Marmite factory, which is also based in Burton and produces approximately 6,000 tons of the food spread every year.
