About Market Bosworth

Situated just to the east of the Ashby de la Zouch canal, the small town of Market Bosworth gets its name from a regular cattle market that finally closed to business in 1996. There is evidence of a settlement on the site, then known only as Bosworth, dating from the Anglo-Saxon period.

The town is probably most famous for its association with the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, the last notable military engagement in the Wars of the Roses between Henry Tudor and King Richard III. It was here that the king was killed, leaving Henry to claim the thrown and begin the era of the Tudor monarchs. Throughout the years it has been depicted as a stereotypical defeat of good over evil, such as at the end of Shakespeare’s Richard III play.

Influential folk guitarist Davey Graham, revered for his playing style by artists such as Nick Drake, Fairport Convention and Bert Jansch, was born in Market Bosworth in 1940. Famous for his trademark “DADGAD” guitar tuning, Graham was commemorated with a blue plaque at the former Bosworth Park Infirmary, the hospital where he was born.
