About Holmfirth
Based around the river Holme, the scenic town of Holmfirth is a former industrial hub, more popularly recognised as the setting of the BBC sitcom, ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. Originally developing around a corn mill and bridge across the river, Holmfirth experienced a period of rapid growth due to the expansion of cloth manufacturing in the area.
Due to the town’s cultural significance, Holmfirth’s economy is now largely dominated by the tourism industry, although cheese manufacturer Longley Farm is also a major employer in the area. Located 7 miles south of the larger town of Huddersfield, Holmfirth is also popular with walkers and wildlife enthusiasts, as well as boasting the Picturedrome, a converted theatre that was shortlisted as one of Britain’s Best Small Venues by the NME in 2014.
The town also houses a wide range of eating establishments that cater to a range of tastes, as well as being thought to incorporate a number of surrounding hamlets and villages such as Thongsbridge, Washpit, Gully and Austonley. Much of the town’s character comes from the iconic sandstone properties arranged on the steep hillsides that make up the Holme Valley.
