About Huddersfield
Halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester, Huddersfield is based at the convergence of the rivers Colne and Holme. Based in the county of West Yorkshire, the town is the largest urbanised area in the Kirklees Metropolitan Borough and is known for its sporting teams, from rugby and football to motorcycle speedway racing and hockey.
Huddersfield has a plethora of well-preserved Victorian architecture, with the most striking being the Victoria Tower on Castle Hill, which was built to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign. The area has been home to people for over 4,000 years and was named Oderesfelt when first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.
During the Industrial Revolution, Huddersfield was a hub of civil unrest, where the Luddites began destroying milling machinery due to the loss of livelihood which was being experienced by local weavers. As a result, the town has enjoyed a long-standing as a centre of textile manufacturing, broadening in the 20th Century to include a range of chemical and engineering.
More recently, the children’s accessory company Mamas & Papas, manufacturer of prams, pushchairs and baby products, has grown to be one of the main employers in the area.
