About Oldham
Found in the wider Greater Manchester area, and historically a part of the county of Lancashire, the town of Oldham grew to prominence during the Victorian era as a result of industrialisation, and in particular the textile industry.
The skyline of Oldham is still dominated by former mills, with a number of them having been turned into apartments. Other property in the town is characterised by the red brick terraces that were built towards the end of the 19th century when it experienced a population boom.
Although no longer dominated by textile production, Oldham still has a number of factories in the area, providing a large sector of employment in the town. Oldham is historically notable for its theatrical culture. Home to the Oldham Coliseum Theatre and the Oldham Theatre Workshop, the town has played host to a number of the acting elite over the years, including Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel in the 20th century. The annual Oldham Carnival originally began in 1900, falling out of favour during the 1990s, before being permanently resurrected in 2006.
