About Shrivenham

Located next to the adjoining village of Watchfield, both of which are just off of the main road towards Oxford, Shrivenham is close to the border of Wiltshire and includes a number of historic properties. One of these is the sizeable Beckett Hall, which now houses the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre, but was once the seat of the Barrington family, although the current building is a more recent Georgian structure.

Shrivenham has been the site of military training colleges since 1946 and is currently home to the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, the higher education facility for people in the British Armed Forces, Civil Service and other governmental departments. The Director General of the Defence Academy changes every three years or so and tends to be a senior ranking officer in one of the UK’s armed forces.

The former train station at Shrivenham is mentioned in the literary classic ‘Tom Brown’s School Days’ by Thomas Hughes. Being built in 1840 for the route between London and Bristol, the station featured Tudor style windows, and there were two fatal accidents at the site over its 120-year history, before finally closing in 1964, with the buildings being demolished the following year.

Whether your home in Shrivenham features a contemporary or classic twist, there will be a shutter to suit your tastes, based on your choices of style and material. Book a free home appointment with your local Shuttercraft today and find a superb shutter solution right here in Shrivenham.
