About Cwmbran
Comprising a number of smaller villages into one larger town, Cwmbran had become the sixth largest urban area in Wales by the time of the 2011 census. It was founded in 1949 as part of the government’s new town programme to provide more housing opportunities for people employed throughout the South Wales Coalfield, but the area itself has been inhabited since at least the Neolithic era, with artefacts from that time being excavated nearby.
Burton’s Biscuit Company is a major employer in Cwmbran, employing around 1000 people at its manufacturing plant by the Afon Llwyd River in the suburb of Llantarnam. The facility is one of three currently owned by the company, which is currently the second-biggest supplier biscuits in the UK, and the Cwmbran plant produces over 400 million Wagon wheels a year.
Helen Adams, contestant on the second series of UK TV series Big Brother, was born in Cwmbran. She peaked the nation’s interest at the time with her on-screen relationship with fellow contestant Paul Clarke, eventually coming second in the programme behind Brian Dowling.
