About Penarth
Arguably the wealthiest seaside resort in the Cardiff area, Penarth has been a popular holiday destination since the Victorian era, when holidaymakers from Midlands and the West Country travelled to the town by train. There is a substantial portion of the population of Penarth that are retired, making up around 25% of residents. Penarth is also now widely used as a commuter town to the nearby Welsh capital.
Throughout the town there are still a number of landmarks dating from its Victorian heyday, with its pier and Esplanade at the centre of that. There is also an Art Deco Pavilion providing seaside glamour from another bygone age.
Just south of Penarth is Cosmeton Lakes Country Park and Medieval Village, a Site of Special Scientific Interest that opened to the public in 1978, that revealed remains of a 600 year old settlement. Offering a unique archaeological project, the medieval village has now been restored and often hosts re-enactments, guided tours and hands-on educational sessions for visitors to the park.
Situated around 5 miles south west of Cardiff, the town forms the southern edge of Cardiff Bay, with its own marina and haven providing shelter for seafaring types. Penarth’s town centre is separated from its seafront and pier by the well-preserved Alexandra Park, the Edwardian public space that was first laid out in 1901. Overlooking the Bristol Channel, Alexandra Park has been awarded the Green Flag Award and features an octagonal bandstand from the 1990s that is modelled on the original structure that was removed in the 1950s.
