About Pontypridd

The county town of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Pontypridd (colloquially referred to as simply ‘Ponty’) is located at a convergence of the rivers Taff and Rhondda, and its name derives from the Welsh meaning ‘bridge by the earthen house’, a reference to a series of bridges based at this point of the river.

When Pontypridd’s Old Bridge was built by architect William Edwards in 1756, it was at the time of construction the longest single-span stone arch bridge in the world. As soon as it was completed, people began to raise questions about its usefulness, with the steepness of its design making it difficult to get horses and carts across. A Victorian era bridge was built adjacent to the Old Bridge, which is still in use to this day.

‘Land of my Fathers’, the unofficial national anthem of Wales, was composed in Pontypridd by Evan James and his son James in 1856. Originally written as a newer folk song for the Llangollen festival, by 1905 the tune had begun to be sung by fans at rugby games, eventually replacing ‘God Bless the Prince of Wales’ at all national and international events.

Pontypridd’s most famous son is the singer Tom Jones, who was born Thomas John Woodward in the suburb of Treforest. Another musician to come from the town is Phil Campbell, famous as guitarist for rock band Motörhead from 1984 to their disbanding in 2015 after the death of lead singer Lemmy.
